CHALLENGE: Scaling Beyond Manual Site Surveys
As the Dallas-based security integration company, TruControls, expanded its team and began taking on larger, more complex projects—scaling up from projects involving three or four doors and a handful of cameras to sites requiring 50 doors and 30 cameras—its existing site survey process began to break down.
What once worked for smaller jobs (e.g., hand-written notes, physical blueprints, and individual knowledge) quickly became a bottleneck. As projects scaled from a handful of doors and cameras to dozens of low-voltage systems across large properties, maintaining accuracy and consistency became increasingly difficult.
“One person going out and mentally doing a site survey was creating a serious bottleneck,” said Austin Lafferty, Head of Operations at TruControls. “After a site survey, we’d get a property map, and someone would just circle on it with a pencil, which was very analog.”
Without a standardized, shareable system in place, key details could be missed or miscommunicated between field teams and estimators. This led to inaccurate quotes, underscoped projects, and inefficiencies in client handoffs, which negatively impacted how the company was perceived during early client interactions.
SOLUTION: A Purpose-Built Platform for Field Collaboration
To address these problems, TruControls implemented System Surveyor in 2021 to digitize and standardize its site survey and system design workflow—enabling teams to capture, share, and act on site data more effectively.
After five years of working with System Surveyor, field technicians can use drag-and-drop simplicity to get initial details, capture photos and gather important on-site details integrators need for an accurate security system design and estimate—all within a centralized, cloud-based environment. This allows information to flow seamlessly from site survey to estimation and client engagement.
“What stands out is that it’s built specifically for our industry,” Lafferty said. “We’re not forcing a generic tool to fit our workflow—it already understands low voltage systems, so it’s easy to use and actually supports how we work in the field.”

By replacing fragmented, manual processes with a purpose-built solution, TruControls established a more consistent and scalable workflow across teams.
“We can map out systems, add notes and photos, and hand everything off without losing anything. It’s taken what used to be a very manual process and made it consistent across the team,” Lafferty added.

With System Surveyor in place, TruControls has significantly improved the accuracy and professionalism of its site surveys, all while reducing the risk of missed details and rework. Their field teams can now walk into client sites fully equipped with digital tools, preloaded information, and the ability to visually map systems in real time. This not only streamlines internal workflows, but also enhances the customer experience from the very first interaction.
Prior to using System Surveyor TruControls would need to take two to three trips to a property to get all necessary information. Now it only takes one trip, cutting the site survey time and cost by up to 70 percent, which has had a direct impact on sales cycle and cash flow.
